Cancer and Exercise

Post Injury or Illness

Post Injury or Illness

Current research has proven that exercise and physical activity assist in cancer prevention, recovery and survival, and it is now recommended that all people with cancer be as physically active as their condition and abilities allow. Cancer exercise can be done before, during and after treatments and are designed to help overcome side effects such as:

· Bone loss

· Depression

· Fatigue

· Increased risk of heart disease

· Lymphedema

· Pelvic floor issues

· Peripheral neuropathy and deconditioning (increasing incidence of falls)

· Reduced quality of life

· Reduce range of movement

· Sarcopenia (increase in body fat and decrease in muscle mass)

Clinical studies have shown that exercise has a positive impact on these side effects and can improve physical functioning which in turn speeds recovery and enhances survival.

When prescribing an exercise program I will work with your healthcare team to individually tailor a program according to your type of cancer, the treatment received, individual requirements, and physical limitations. Your personalized exercise prescription will be created using the most current evidence based research for your disease.

If you have been prescribed at-home exercises by a healthcare provider such as a Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, or Physician, but unable to complete those exercises on your own, I can assist.

I will work with you one-on-one to provide the space and equipment needed, assistance with proper form, and of course motivation and support. As your condition improves I am able to collaborate with your healthcare team to slowly and safely progress your exercises with the goal of helping you get stronger and healthier.

Mobility Loss

There is a natural regression in the human physical condition that happens as we age or when we become ill. These include:

  • Loss of muscle strength and power - By the age of 70 years old the average person has a 40% loss of muscle and 30 % decrease in strength, mostly in the lower body (CSEP, 2019).
  • Slower to react - As we age or become ill, our muscle reaction slows down and we are unable to move our bodies quick enough to prevent injury such as falling and tripping.
  • Loss of muscle coordination - Muscles are supposed to work together as teams, and as we age or become ill, communication slows down. This often contributes to our loss of balance.
  • Joint changes - Joints become stiff and painful which shortens our range of motion and decreases our ability to bend and reach.

Mobility Training includes progressive exercises to increase both muscle mass and strength, improve agility for quicker reactions, regain balance and coordination, and provide flexibility for easier movement. Whether you are using a mobility aid or can walk independently, I can create an exercise prescription that works for you.

There are unfortunately many barriers to exercise, or reasons why people don't do it. Some of these are:

  • Your body has changed due to illness, injury or obesity, and you aren't sure what you CAN do
  • You are shy or self-conscious
  • You are new to exercise and don't know where to begin or how
  • You need motivation
  • You don't like being in a regular gym

I can offer you a safe and comfortable space, tailor a program specific to your needs, and of course provide motivation and encouragement. Let me get you started, build your confidence, and help to keep you going!
